About USAA
USAA (United Services Automobile Association) was founded in 1922 by 25 U.S. Army officers who decided to insure each other's vehicles when no other insurer would cover the risk of military auto insurance. Today, USAA serves over 13 million members and manages over $210 billion in assets. Membership is restricted exclusively to active-duty military, veterans who received an honorable discharge, cadets, midshipmen, and their eligible family members. This strict eligibility requirement is not just a brand identity choice — it is fundamental to USAA's pricing model. By insuring only military-affiliated members, USAA underwrites a risk pool of disciplined, generally rule-following individuals with stable government-backed income. This uniform risk profile is why USAA consistently delivers premiums 15-20% below national averages for comparable coverage. Structurally, USAA operates as a reciprocal exchange rather than a traditional stock or mutual company. Members technically insure one another through a subscriber-to-subscriber agreement managed by USAA's board. This means policyholders are the owners — there are no outside shareholders extracting profit. The practical result is that surplus revenue flows back to members through competitive premiums, annual dividends (USAA returned $1.07 billion in dividends to members in 2023), and reinvestment in services. This ownership structure also insulates USAA from Wall Street pressure to prioritize quarterly earnings over member satisfaction, which directly explains why the company has ranked first in J.D. Power's auto insurance satisfaction study for 18 of the last 20 years and maintains Net Promoter Scores above 75 — more than double the industry average of approximately 35. USAA's claims process reflects an institutional understanding of military life that no competitor can replicate. Claims adjusters are trained on military-specific scenarios: PCS (permanent change of station) moves across state lines, deployment-related vehicle storage, overseas vehicle incidents on military installations, and the unique liability questions that arise when a service member's vehicle is damaged during government-ordered relocation. USAA's mobile app allows claims to be filed from any global time zone, critical for members stationed in Europe, the Pacific, or at sea. The company settles 95% of auto claims within 5 business days, and members who are deployed receive automatic premium reductions — in some cases cutting comprehensive-only coverage rates by more than 60% while the vehicle sits garaged stateside.
Key Features
Military-Specific Benefits
USAA understands military life in ways no civilian insurer can match: deployment storage rates that cut premiums by up to 60%, seamless PCS transfers across state lines without coverage gaps, overseas liability coverage for vehicles on foreign military bases, and automatic premium adjustments when service members change duty stations. The company also offers military base access discounts and waives cancellation fees for involuntary deployments.
Reciprocal Exchange Ownership
Unlike publicly traded insurers beholden to shareholders, USAA operates as a reciprocal exchange where members own the company. This structure returned $1.07 billion in member dividends in 2023 alone and allows USAA to price policies for long-term member value rather than quarterly profit targets. Your premiums fund other members' claims, and surplus comes back to you.
Industry-Best Satisfaction Scores
Ranked #1 in J.D. Power auto insurance satisfaction 18 of the last 20 years, with a Net Promoter Score above 75 versus the industry average of 35. USAA settles 95% of auto claims within 5 business days and provides 24/7 claims filing from any time zone — essential for globally deployed service members.
Integrated Financial Ecosystem
Members can combine auto, home, life, and property insurance with USAA banking (checking, savings, CDs), credit cards (with no foreign transaction fees for overseas military), investment management, and retirement planning in a single platform. Bundling across product lines unlocks additional discounts, and the unified app lets you manage everything from insurance claims to investment rebalancing.

Notable Case Studies
Deployment Premium Reduction
Army captain deployed to Kuwait for 12 months contacted USAA to reduce auto coverage on two garaged vehicles — a 2021 Ford F-150 and a 2019 Honda Civic. Both vehicles were parked at the family's on-base housing at Fort Campbell.
PCS Move Cross-Country Coverage Transfer
Navy lieutenant commander received PCS orders transferring from Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia to Naval Base San Diego, California. The family needed to update auto and renters insurance across state lines, register in a new state, and maintain continuous coverage during a 3-week cross-country drive with household goods in transit.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Highest customer satisfaction ratings in the insurance industry — #1 in J.D. Power auto insurance satisfaction 18 of the last 20 years with NPS scores double the industry average
- Premiums consistently 15-20% below national averages due to the uniform military risk pool and reciprocal exchange structure that returns surplus to members as dividends
- Military-specific benefits no competitor matches: deployment storage rates (up to 60% savings), seamless PCS transfers across state lines, and overseas coverage for vehicles on foreign military installations
- Integrated financial ecosystem combining insurance, banking, credit cards, and investment management in a single platform with a mobile app designed for global military use across all time zones
- Reciprocal exchange ownership means no outside shareholders — $1.07 billion returned to members in dividends in 2023, with pricing decisions driven by member value rather than Wall Street earnings pressure
Cons
- Membership is strictly limited to active-duty military, veterans with honorable discharge, cadets, midshipmen, and their eligible family members — civilians with no military connection cannot join regardless of how much they want the coverage
- No local agent offices anywhere in the country; all service is conducted by phone, app, or website, which frustrates members who prefer face-to-face interaction for complex claims or policy changes
- Higher absolute complaint volume at the CFPB (1,680 in the last 3 years) driven by the massive 13-million-member base — the per-member complaint rate is actually among the lowest in the industry, but the raw numbers can appear alarming
- Eligibility verification can be cumbersome for family members, particularly adult children who must prove their parent's qualifying military service, and some members report delays in establishing eligibility for non-obvious family relationships like stepchildren or former spouses

transitioned from active duty to veteran, USAA made it seamless
Separated from the Army after 8 years. USAA transitioned all my policies from active-duty to veteran status automatically. Rates stayed competitive (small increase on auto since I lost the active-duty military discount, but still cheaper than any civilian carrier). The veteran benefits -- career transition resources, financial counseling, insurance continuity -- make the separation process slightly less stressful. USAA is a lifetime relationship, not just an active-duty benefit.
investment options are solid but not as cheap as Vanguard
USAA's investment platform offers mutual funds and managed portfolios. Expense ratios are 0.15-0.45% which is reasonable but higher than Vanguard's 0.03-0.10%. For the convenience of having everything under one roof, I accept the slight premium. But if cost optimization is your priority, use USAA for insurance and banking, and Vanguard or Fidelity for investments. No need to be a purist about single-provider loyalty.
suspended my renters policy during deployment with one phone call
PCS'd to a 12-month overseas assignment. USAA suspended my renters policy (no premium during suspension), stored my auto policy (reduced rate for stored vehicle), and adjusted everything back when I returned. One phone call, 15 minutes. Try explaining military deployment schedules to GEICO or Progressive. USAA handles it because every employee understands military life. The operational understanding of military logistics is baked into every process.
hurricane damaged our house, USAA had an adjuster there in 48 hours
Hurricane came through Pensacola. Roof damage, water intrusion, fence destroyed. Called USAA the morning after. Adjuster was at my house 48 hours later -- they fly in catastrophe response teams to disaster areas. Initial check for emergency repairs arrived in 5 days. Full settlement check in 3 weeks. My neighbors with State Farm waited 3 weeks just for an adjuster. USAA's catastrophe response is military-grade efficient.
the best insurance company in America and it's not close
Been with USAA since basic training. Everything is through them. When my husband deployed they suspended our auto premium without us even asking. No other insurance company does that. If you're eligible just sign up already.
banking + insurance + investing all under one roof
USAA checking (free), savings (competitive rates), auto insurance (cheapest), home insurance (cheapest), life insurance (competitive), and investment accounts (low-cost funds). Everything in one app, one login, one company. The convenience of having all financial products with one institution that understands military life is unmatched. Early pay for military deposits (get paid up to 2 days early) is a nice bonus during deployments when timing matters.
best customer service in any industry, period
Best customer service of any company I deal with. Not just insurance, ANY company. Every time I call someone picks up fast and actually fixes the problem. Called at 11pm once before a move and they still helped.
amazing company but membership is limited
USAA insurance is only available to active military, veterans, and their immediate family. My friend who's a firefighter can't join even though he serves the public. The exclusivity is what makes the rates possible -- military families are a lower-risk insurance pool. But it means 95% of Americans can't access these products. If you ARE eligible (check if your parents or grandparents served), sign up immediately. If not, this review doesn't apply to you.
$640/year full coverage -- $350 less than GEICO
$640/year full coverage on my CR-V. GEICO wanted almost a grand. If you qualify for USAA the rates are just way cheaper than anything else out there.
wife filed a claim while I was deployed, they were incredible
My wife had a car accident while I was deployed overseas. She called USAA, they handled everything -- tow, rental car, body shop coordination, settlement with the other driver's insurer. They even assigned a military-aware claims adjuster who understood that the policyholder (me) was literally unreachable. My wife said the experience was "like having family help you." No commercial insurer understands the unique challenges of military families the way USAA does.
