About Navy Federal Credit Union
Navy Federal is not just the largest credit union in the world; at $170+ billion in assets and 13+ million members, it is larger than the vast majority of commercial banks. The scale matters because it gives Navy Federal purchasing power and operational efficiency that smaller credit unions cannot match, while retaining the not-for-profit structure that channels surplus back to members as better rates. The result is an institution that consistently offers auto loan rates 1-2% below commercial bank averages and VA mortgage rates that are among the lowest available anywhere. Eligibility is broader than most people assume. The direct path is any current or former military service member, reservist, or DoD civilian employee. But the family pathway is wider than you would expect: spouses, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, and household members of existing Navy Federal members all qualify. Adopted and step-relations count. If your spouse's father served in any branch, your spouse can join through the father, and then you can join through your spouse. Many people who assume they are ineligible are actually one or two family connections away from qualifying. Navy Federal does not aggressively advertise this because unlimited growth could strain their infrastructure, but they will honor any legitimate family chain you can document.
Key Features
Below-Market Lending as Core Advantage
Navy Federal's loan rates are not just competitive; they are structurally lower because the credit union does not need to generate shareholder profit. Auto loans run 1-2% below market, personal loans 2-3% below, and VA mortgages are consistently among the lowest nationally. This is where Navy Federal's real value lies, not in deposit rates.
Expansive Eligibility Through Family Chains
Eligibility extends through broad family connections: spouses, children, parents, grandparents, siblings, and household members of existing members. Step and adopted relations qualify. The practical effect is that one military-connected person in an extended family can create a membership pathway for dozens of relatives.
#1 Customer Satisfaction, Consistently
Navy Federal has won more J.D. Power banking satisfaction awards than any other institution. This is not marketing; it reflects a genuine service culture rooted in the military community. Member service representatives are typically reachable within minutes, not the 30-60 minute hold times common at big banks.
350+ Branches Including Military Installations
Unlike online-only banks, Navy Federal operates full-service branches on military bases worldwide. For active duty members who PCS frequently, having a bank that follows you to your next installation is a significant practical benefit that digital banks cannot replicate.
How It Works
Verify Your Eligibility Path
Identify your connection: direct military service, DoD employment, or family relationship to an existing member. If unsure, call Navy Federal directly as they will help trace eligibility through family chains that you may not have considered.
Join with a $5 Savings Deposit
Membership requires opening a Share Savings account with a $5 minimum deposit. This $5 remains in the account as your ownership share in the credit union and cannot be withdrawn while you are a member.
Open Additional Products
Once a member, you have access to the full product suite: checking, CDs, credit cards, auto loans, mortgages, and personal loans. Apply for lending products to capture Navy Federal's biggest advantage: below-market rates.
Extend Membership to Family
Once you are a member, your immediate family members become eligible to join. This creates a compounding eligibility chain that can extend Navy Federal access across your entire extended family.

Review Summary
Notable Case Studies
VA Mortgage Rate Advantage
Active duty Navy officer compared VA mortgage rates from 5 lenders for a $450,000 home purchase. Navy Federal offered 5.75% with no origination fee, versus 6.25% with a 0.50% origination fee from the next-best lender.
Family Eligibility Chain
Civilian whose grandfather served in the Korean War joined Navy Federal through his mother (who was eligible through her father). He then extended eligibility to his wife and adult children.

Auto loan saved us big money
Got pre-approved for our car loan before going to the dealer. Rate was way below what the dealership offered. Shoutout to Kevin at Navy Fed for making it easy.
Customer service is top notch
Called about a weird charge on my account and got a real person in under 2 minutes. She fixed it right away and was super nice about it. Try that with Chase lol.
Mortgage process was a NIGHTMARE
Tried to get a mortgage through Navy Fed and it was the worst experience of my life. Lost our paperwork TWICE. Took 90 days to close when they promised 45. Almost lost the house. Our realtor said she'd never seen anything like it. The low rate doesn't matter if you can't actually close on time!!! We ended up scrambling to find a backup lender at the last minute. Never again.
Branch wait times are brutal
The branch near us always has a 30-40 minute wait. Always. I've gone at different times of day and it doesn't matter. For a credit union that prides itself on service the in-person experience is lacking.
Best bank for military families period
We've been with Navy Fed since 2014. Auto loans, mortgage, checking, savings, credit card. Everything under one roof and the rates are always better than what you'd get at a regular bank. Just renewed our mortgage and saved a ton.
Love the credit card
The cashRewards card gives me great cash back and no annual fee. Combined with the checking account it's a solid setup. Been a member 8 years.
Great rates, app needs work
The app crashes on me at least once a week. Freezes when I try to deposit checks. But the rates and service are so good I deal with it. Just please update the app Navy Fed.
Not bad
It's fine. Not as amazing as people make it sound. Rates are good but not dramatically better than what I could get at a local credit union.
Savings rate could be higher
Checking is great but the savings APY is just ok. I moved most of my savings to a HYSA elsewhere and keep Navy Fed for checking and loans. Still a fan overall though.
meh
It's a bank. Does what it's supposed to do.
