Center-right
As President’s Obama poll numbers have dropped, there has been a surge of interest in the composition of the American ideological landscape. Some commentators have said, and some data supports this view, that the average American leans to the right rather than left.
The results of our recent Zogby Interactive survey support this view. When we asked a sample of 2500 adults to position themselves on a 1-9 ideological scale, where 1 referred to extremely liberal and 9 to an extremely conservative position, the average was 5.50 and the median was 6. 3. Democrats, who made up 38% of thes sample put themselves at 3.59 on average. Republicans, who comprised 31% of the sample, at 7.51. The average independent voter – a block that made up 28% of the sample – was at 5.85. All of this suggests that America leans to the right.
Do you think that as younger generations come of voting age, there will be a change? Where would you position yourself?

7.5 IS WHERE I AM
Not really. Students are being educated through Rush Limbaugh and the whole Fox News organization along with their parents. It is harder for the left to indoctrinate children as they did in the 60’s and 70’s. As a teacher, I can assure you the teens today are very sharp and not easily led into a socialist mindset. They are fighting back against the obvious indoctrination by many leftist teachers. I know this for a fact. I teach in a high school.
Your most recent poll shows Obama’s loss of support is coming from dissatisfied Democrats, which contradicts this post’s first premise. And don’t elections count? If the nation leans to the right, why are Republicans in the minority? Asking people to rate along a left-right scale is not very useful. What does it mean in terms of real issues? And how much of it is a projection of self-image? Being personally conservative can be seen as a virtue that people want to identify with. Also, it is quite clear that conservatives in the U.S. are more likely to hold extreme views and would put themselves at the extreme of your scale.
2 notes worth mentioning:
(1) The “electorate” (Those that vote using the US Electoral College system) vary from average people being polled; and
(2) opinions from November 2008 to September 2009 should be expected to vary leaning away from the party in power and toward the party out of power because people are usually more “energized” against something then they are for it.
Well — I “WAS” a supporter!
Given some of the Czars he has as ‘close advisors’ such as Mr. Van Jones, I do not want Obama, or any of his Chicago gang indoctrinating my kids or grandkids through public schools — as he proposes on Sep 8!! DID WE ELECT A WOULD BE DICTATOR??
I am shocked that he would pull a fool hearted trick like this before another one of his BIG SPEECHES!! Just shows the arrogance of this gang!!
Obama came into office with more good will than any president — at least since JFK. It has been squandered, and will take a lot of time and effort to rekindle the support — if at all. It is now a matter of TRUST!!
One of Obama’s major problems is that he delivers way too many speeches, but NOTHING OF IMPORT HAPPENS – in fact, they get worse!! He seems to not listen to the American people – just like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. WHY SHOULD THE AMERICAN PEOPLE LISTEN TO HIM??
TEAM OBAMA IS AFFLICTED WITH ‘FIRE, READY, AIM’ SYNDROME!
They fire before they are ready; and forget to aim until they see they missed the target.
This is true of their:
*Cabinet selections: tax cheats, and the attorney general calling us cowards
*Stimulus Package (are YOU STIMULATED YET??)
*TARP additions (WOW — what a deficit trick!)
*Appointment of near three dozen czars – some with dubious backgrounds and motives. Where is Congressional overwatch??
*Foreign Policy miss steps (the UK did not even think enough of us to seek council before releasing a terrorist responsible for PAN AM Flight 103. We lost 180 Americans!!
*Cap & Trade (Where will US jobs go with this giveaway? China? India?)
* …and who can forget his Professor Gates moment, followed by his beer reconciliation?? At “teachable moment??” What did you learn??
*Cash for Clunkers (when will the dealers be paid????)
*and Health Care Reform! (Are you really willing to turn your and your families health care over to this bunch — who relishes crises?? Do you really know what Obama wants in a health care bill?? Do you really know what it is going to cost you and your children in the out years??)
*Hinting that they are planning to restrict freedom of speech (fairness doctrine) and control the Internet
*Additionally, this crew is making major errors in policy in Afghanistan. The Obama 96 Hour Rule is going to cost lives. If Obama is not committed to WIN, then we should come home and not waste lives. This will be Obama’s Vietnam, because it is OBAMA’S POLICIES!! The taliban must be laughing their heads off!!
*And for each goof, the response is: “Well, this is what George W. Bush left us!” Is he simply not up to the tasks at hand? That refrain is now a reminder that we made a BIG, BAD, MISTAKE IN NOVEMBER 2008. This is the most arrogant bunch I can remember, and I am 70+, and WAS a supporter!!
They simply FAIL TO PLAN! Then, blame their shortcomings on someone else — usually the bad hand ‘Bush handed them’. This crew is really making Carter look more than eligible for the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE!
Extreme conservative views:
Defend and protect the Constitution
Keep spending under control and within the public’s affordability
Preventing government from stealing more than 50% of one’s earnings
Believing in capitalism as a better economic model than socialism
If that is extreme, call me an extremist.
Let’s not forget the dems shielding Rep. Charlie Rangel-even though he failed to report $1 million dollars of his earnings and under-valued his Dominican property. Gotta love those dems. Then they wonder what is wrong with us? I think a better question is-what’s wrong with Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and the rest of you liberals? Seems as if you can’t see the boulder that is infecting your own party for trying to point out the pebble in the republican party’s.

First of all, Republicans didn’t give a hoot that Bush et al shredded the Constitution during his 8 years and Republicans sure as hell did not keep spending under control. Socialism and capitalism COMBINED is a better economic system than either alone and corporations steal waaaay more of your livelihood than does the government.
Finally, we are NOT a center right country. Conservatives made the word “liberal” an ugly word and liberals did nothing to defend it, so people perceive it negatively, but when you look at what people say they support (Medicare, education, taxing the rich, universal healthcare, protecting the environment, curbs on corporate power, etc.) they are definitely left of center.
Kitty… Perhaps you need to take another look at the polling. Most of what you say the country supports, it does NOT support. America does not support universal health care. The public is moving against the global warming movement now, not against it. And, who would be AGAINST education? I mean, come on now.
Taxation is a 50/50 split. Most polls also show that the country has moved to the right on abortion.
I believe the influence of indoctrination is clearly seen in our children’s school text books. It’s impact is being and will continue to be seen in our children’s view of our country as not the “light on the hill”, the greatest nation or defenders of democracy and freedom but as the unfeeling, overstepping, war mongering country that takes advantage of the weak and ignores those in need (hmmm, kinda how Liberal Democrates describe Conservative Republicans).
Until our children’s indoctrination is terminated, this nation’s young will continue to fall for idealized socialistic sacrifice. They will grow up and think how wonderful they are to vote away their rights and freedoms, to make up for all the horrible things done in the past and everyone will be equal now. They are never taught that society is most effective and efficient when people are free to engage in work of their own choosing that benefits themselves and their families within the framework of a society’s norms. Nor are they taught that an unchecked government breeds corruption and greed, consuming freedom until it’s citizen’s are nothing more than slaves to feed the machine.
The real question here is the validity of the poll. Zogby, let us talk about the nature of the sample population, and whether it is truly random. I would be interested in the philosophical/political leanings of the non-responders. In fact, what is the percentage of non-responders? You don’t tell us. Give us a feel for the demographics of people who are not represented. What was the age breakdown? I find the small size of the sample in relationship to the total population is suspect as well. Also at least 1/3 of the time, your surveys include “wife beater” questions. So while it makes interesting grist for blogs, without additional information, I would hate to state that the results of this poll capture any “truth”.
I answered that poll with a 5. Hard to know what the youth will do.
@Slothrop
Good, and thank you.
@carol
I’m sorry, I was thanking Carol, not Slothrop.
