About Citi Credit Cards

Citi's credit card division is the third-largest in the United States by outstanding balances and the only major issuer whose transfer partner map touches all three global airline alliances: Star Alliance (via Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Avianca LifeMiles), oneworld (via Cathay Pacific Asia Miles and Qantas), and SkyTeam (via Virgin Atlantic and Air France-KLM Flying Blue). This trifecta matters because it means Citi ThankYou points can book flights on virtually any carrier in the world through at least one alliance partner, something even Chase Ultimate Rewards cannot do without supplementing with separate programs. The ThankYou points transfer to Singapore Airlines at a 1:1 ratio, making Citi one of only two U.S. programs (alongside Chase) that can book Singapore Suites -- the single most valuable award redemption in the points world, returning over 10 cents per point on the roughly 90,000-mile cost of a Singapore to New York flight in a private suite. Meanwhile, the Citi Custom Cash earns 5% on your top spending category each billing cycle (up to $500), automatically adapting without manual activation -- a mechanic that outperforms the Chase Freedom Flex's quarterly rotation system for consumers who forget to enroll. The Citi Double Cash technically earns 1% at purchase plus 1% when you pay, meaning you must pay your full statement balance to capture the full 2%; carry a balance and you earn only 1% while paying interest, a structural asymmetry that benefits Citi and is rarely disclosed in marketing. Citi's 0% APR offers reach 21 months on the Diamond Preferred -- the longest in the industry -- but the 5% balance transfer fee ($5 minimum) means a $20,000 transfer costs $1,000 upfront. Cardholders should compare that fee to the interest they would pay at their current rate over the promotional period to determine actual savings. The Citi Strata Premier (replacing the old Premier) carries a $95 annual fee and earns 3x on flights, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and gas, positioning it as a direct competitor to Chase Sapphire Preferred at an identical price point but with a broader bonus-category footprint.

Key Features

Deepest Airline Transfer Map in the U.S.

ThankYou Points transfer 1:1 to 14 partners including Singapore Airlines, Turkish Miles&Smiles, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, JetBlue TrueBlue, and Avianca LifeMiles. This gives Citi unique access to all three global alliances -- a coverage gap neither Chase nor Amex fully matches.

Auto-Adapting 5% Category (Custom Cash)

The Citi Custom Cash automatically detects your highest-spend category each billing cycle and applies 5% back (up to $500), covering restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, travel, transit, streaming, drugstores, home improvement, fitness, and live entertainment. No enrollment, no rotation schedule, no forgetting.

Longest 0% APR Window on the Market

The Diamond Preferred offers 0% for 21 months on balance transfers -- three to six months longer than typical competitors. Combined with the Simplicity's no-late-fee policy, Citi dominates the balance-transfer and low-interest niche.

Citi Entertainment Presale Network

All Citi cardholders get presale access to thousands of events through Citi Entertainment, which in practice delivers better seat availability than Amex presales for many mid-tier venues, particularly in the New York metro area and Los Angeles.

How It Works

1

Map Your Spending

Categorize your monthly spending across dining, groceries, travel, gas, and general purchases. Citi's lineup has a specialist card for almost every pattern -- 5% auto-category (Custom Cash), 2% flat (Double Cash), or 3x multi-category (Strata Premier).

2

Pre-Qualify Without a Pull

Use Citi's pre-qualification tool at citi.com/preapproval. This generates a soft inquiry only and shows eligible cards with estimated credit limits and APR ranges specific to your profile.

3

Apply and Get Instant Decision

Most Citi applications return a decision within 60 seconds. If you receive a pending status, the automated reconsideration line at (800) 695-5171 can often push approvals through same-day.

4

Optimize Your First 90 Days

Hit the sign-up bonus minimum spend, enroll in Citi Offers (merchant-specific cashback deals), and link your ThankYou account to any transfer partners you plan to use. Points do not transfer until partner accounts are linked.

Notable Case Studies

21-Month Balance Transfer Payoff

Cardholder transferred $18,500 across two high-interest cards (averaging 24.99% APR) to a Citi Diamond Preferred at 0% APR for 21 months. Paid $925 upfront as a 5% balance transfer fee, then divided the remaining balance into 21 equal payments of $838/month.

Eliminated $8,100 in projected interest charges over the payoff period. Net savings after the $925 transfer fee: $7,175. Credit utilization dropped from 78% to 0% over 21 months, contributing to a 65-point FICO score improvement.

Singapore Suites Redemption via ThankYou Points

Points enthusiast accumulated 180,000 ThankYou Points over 14 months using a Citi Strata Premier (3x dining and travel) paired with a Custom Cash (5% groceries). Transferred 92,000 points to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer at 1:1 and booked a JFK-to-Frankfurt Singapore Suites ticket.

The Singapore Suites ticket retails for $8,400+ cash. At 92,000 points, the redemption value was 9.1 cents per ThankYou Point -- roughly 4.5 times the value of cashing out through the ThankYou portal at 1 cent each.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Only U.S. issuer with transfer partners spanning all three airline alliances (Star, oneworld, SkyTeam)
  • Custom Cash's auto-adapting 5% category eliminates the activation hassle of rotating-category cards
  • 21-month 0% APR on Diamond Preferred is the longest promotional period in the market
  • No annual fee on four of the six core consumer cards (Double Cash, Custom Cash, Simplicity, Diamond Preferred)
  • Strata Premier's 3x across five everyday categories matches Chase Sapphire Preferred on value at the same $95 fee

Cons

  • Customer service consistently scores below Amex and Discover in J.D. Power satisfaction surveys
  • ThankYou portal cash-out value is only 1 cent per point -- transfers are where the real value lives, but most cardholders never transfer
  • Balance transfer fees of 3-5% add real cost: a $20,000 transfer on Diamond Preferred costs $600-$1,000 upfront
  • 48-month rule: Citi restricts sign-up bonuses if you opened or closed the same card within the past 48 months, limiting churning

Strata Premier + Custom Cash + Double Cash = complete system

Running the Citi trifecta: Strata Premier (3x travel/dining/grocery/gas), Custom Cash (5x top category), Double Cash (2% everything else). Combined annual fee: $95. I earn an average of 3.2% across all spending. Points pool into one ThankYou account. Transfer to Singapore KrisFlyer for international flights. This three-card system costs less than a single Amex Gold ($250) and earns comparably. fwiw the Citi ecosystem is massively underrated by the points community.

Strata Premier beats Sapphire Preferred for everyday spending

Both cost $95/year. Chase Sapphire Preferred: 3x dining, 2x travel, 1x everything else. Citi Strata Premier: 3x flights, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, AND gas stations. Five categories vs two. For everyday spending the Strata Premier is clearly better. The Sapphire wins on transfer partner VALUE (Hyatt transfers) but the Strata wins on earning SPEED. I carry both but if I could only have one $95 travel card, it's the Strata Premier.

pre-qualification tool was accurate -- approved at the exact terms shown

Used citi.com/preapproval before applying. Showed me the Strata Premier with estimated $12K limit and 19.99% APR. Applied and got... $12K limit and 19.99% APR. Exactly what was shown. The pre-qual is a soft inquiry so no credit impact. This is how it should work -- you see your terms BEFORE the hard pull. Compare this to Upstart where pre-qual rates meant nothing. If Citi pre-qualifies you, the final terms are reliable.

ThankYou points transfer to Singapore Suites changed my life

Transferred my ThankYou points to Singapore KrisFlyer and flew Suites class to Europe. Worth thousands in cash. People on r/churning talk about this one all the time and I finally pulled it off. Transfer partners are where the real value is with Citi.

Simplicity card has NO late fee which is wild

The Citi Simplicity has no late fee and no penalty APR. If you miss a payment (which you shouldn't but life happens), you don't get hit with a $40 fee and your APR doesn't jump to 29.99%. This is unique among major issuers. Combined with 0% for 21 months on BT, it's the ultimate safety net card for someone consolidating debt who might miss a payment during a rough month. It won't punish you for being human. More cards should work this way.

the 1%+1% structure has a catch nobody talks about

The Double Cash earns 1% when you buy and 1% when you pay. But if you carry a balance, you only get the first 1% -- you don't earn the second 1% on any amount that rolls over. AND you're paying interest. So carrying a $5,000 balance at 24.99% means you're paying $104/month in interest while earning $4.17 in rewards on the payment. The card is only 2% cash back if you pay in full every month. Carry a balance and it's a 1% card with expensive interest. Citi knows this.

got Hamilton tickets through Citi presale when Ticketmaster was sold out

Citi Entertainment presale access got me Hamilton tickets that were completely sold out on Ticketmaster. Two tickets, orchestra section, face value. The presale window is typically 2-3 days before public sale. Not every event is available but for concerts and Broadway shows in NYC and LA, Citi presales are legit. Works with ANY Citi credit card, even the no-annual-fee ones. This is an underrated benefit that doesn't show up in points-per-dollar calculations.

Custom Cash auto-5% is brilliant for lazy people

I am the person who ALWAYS forgets to activate quarterly categories on Chase Freedom. The Citi Custom Cash just detects my top category automatically. Last month it was groceries (5% on $487). Month before it was gas (5% on $312). No activation, no enrollment, no remembering. $0 annual fee. This is the best no-effort cashback card that exists imo. The $500/month cap limits whales but for normal human spending it's perfect.

the ThankYou portal gives you only 1cpp -- transfers are the only play

If you redeem ThankYou points through the Citi portal, you get exactly 1 cent per point. A $500 flight costs 50,000 points through the portal. Transfer those same 50,000 points to Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles and you can book a $2,000 business class ticket. The portal is a VALUE TRAP. Citi knows most cardholders will never transfer points, which is why they can afford to give generous signup bonuses. If you're going to use Citi cards, learn the transfer partners or you're leaving 75% of the value on the table.

DENIED the signup bonus because I had the card 3 years ago

Applied for the Strata Premier to get the 75K point bonus. Approved for the card but DENIED the bonus because I had the old Premier card which I closed 40 months ago. Citi's 48-month rule means you can't get a signup bonus if you opened or closed the SAME card family within 48 months. 40 months ago wasn't enough. This rule is hidden in the fine print and the application doesn't warn you. Wasted a hard pull on a card with no bonus. Check the 48-month rule BEFORE applying.

Important Credit Card Disclaimers

  • Credit card interest rates, fees, and terms are subject to change at any time. The rates and terms described on this page reflect publicly available information as of the date shown and may differ from current offers. Always review the Schumer Box and cardholder agreement on citi.com before applying.
  • Introductory 0% APR offers are temporary promotional rates. After the promotional period ends, a variable APR based on the Prime Rate (currently resulting in APRs of 18.24% - 28.99% on most Citi cards) will apply. A single late payment may trigger a penalty APR of up to 29.99% that applies to all future balances.
  • Balance transfer fees of 3% to 5% are charged on the amount transferred and posted to your balance immediately. On a $15,000 transfer, that fee ranges from $450 to $750. Calculate whether the fee is less than the interest you would otherwise pay at your current rate to determine if a balance transfer makes financial sense.
  • ThankYou Points valuations referenced in this review are based on estimated redemption values through transfer partners, which fluctuate based on award availability, partner devaluations, and booking patterns. Cash redemption through the ThankYou portal is fixed at 1 cent per point. Citi and its partners may change transfer ratios, award charts, or program terms without notice.
