VA loan in Rockford -- behind 4 months after factory closure. Does the VA work with Illinois courts?

Veteran with a VA loan in Rockford. The Chrysler supplier I worked for closed and I'm 4 months behind on my VA mortgage ($1,300/month). Foreclosure hasn't been filed yet but I expect it soon. Do VA loss mitigation programs work alongside Illinois' judicial foreclosure process?

The VA requires servicers to exhaust all loss mitigation before foreclosure. VA special forbearance, modification, and partial claim options are all available. Since foreclosure hasn't been filed yet, you have the best possible window to resolve this. Factory closure is a documented hardship that strengthens your case. Also contact Prairie State Legal Services in Rockford for free legal assistance if a lawsuit is eventually filed.

Rockford vet community has your back. The Winnebago County Veterans Assistance Commission can connect you with emergency financial assistance while you work on the mortgage. Also check with the VFW and American Legion posts in Rockford -- they sometimes have emergency grants for veterans facing housing instability. And the VA Loan Technician program is legit -- they will call your servicer directly and push for resolution.

UPDATE: Cook County mediation saved my Naperville home -- modification approved after 4 sessions

Sharing a win. I was 6 months behind on my mortgage in Naperville (DuPage County, so technically not Cook County mediation, but the judicial process still gave me time). Got a free attorney through Prairie State Legal Services who represented me in the DuPage County foreclosure case. About 8 months from foreclosure filing to modification approval. The attorney filed motions to delay the case while the modification was pending, which the DuPage judge granted. I successfully appealed my Cook County assessment and got a $25k reduction in assessed value which saved about $200/month in taxes. The process takes 3-6 months but it's worth it. Also make sure you have the Homeowner Exemption ($10,000 reduction in EAV). Many south suburban homeowners don't realize they need to apply for it. Check the Cook County Assessor's website or call their office.

Went through Cook County mediation on my home in Chatham. Got a free attorney through Legal Aid Chicago who attended all sessions. The mediator held my servicer accountable and they eventually offered an FHA modification with lower rate and arrears capitalized. Total process took about 6 months.
