UPDATE: MHDC assistance + modification saved my Springfield home -- $10k in arrears covered

Success from Springfield. Was 5 months behind on my conventional mortgage. Applied for MHDC Homeowner Assistance Fund which covered $10,000 in arrears. Also got a Flex Modification that lowered my rate and payment. Between the MHDC funds and the modification, I went from 5 months behind to fully current with a lower payment. Missouri homeowners -- apply for MHDC assistance. The program has real money.

MHDC processing took about 6 weeks. I applied for both MHDC and the modification simultaneously with my HUD counselor's help. MHDC covered the arrears and the modification adjusted the going-forward payment. Doing both at once was the strategy my counselor recommended and it worked perfectly. The counselor handled all the paperwork for both applications.

Kansas City east side -- behind on mortgage and my neighborhood is losing homeowners to foreclosure. How do we fight back?

I own a home on KC's east side (64130 zip). I'm behind 3 months and I know at least 4 other families on my block dealing with the same thing. It feels like the whole neighborhood is going under. Are there community-level programs that can help multiple families at once?

Our organization works in 64130. We've held foreclosure prevention workshops at churches and community centers that brought HUD counselors and legal aid attorneys directly to the neighborhood. Several families got modifications and MHDC assistance. The key is reducing the barrier to access -- many east side homeowners don't know these free resources exist. Under CFPB rules, if submitted more than 37 days before the sale, they must evaluate it. 3) Contact Legal Services of Eastern Missouri for emergency legal assistance. 4) If the servicer won't pause the sale, consult a bankruptcy attorney about Chapter 13 -- filing triggers an automatic stay that stops the sale instantly. 5) Apply for MHDC Homeowner Assistance Fund for potential financial assistance. I was in this exact position in North City. Filed Chapter 13 bankruptcy 5 days before the sale. Automatic stay stopped it cold. Then worked out a loan modification through the bankruptcy process.
