Malbec wine suddenly burst onto the world wine stage in the early-1990's. It was made famous thanks to the Argentine wineries that capitalized on the long growing season, rich soil and adaptability of the Malbec grape itself.
Although it got its start in the famous wineries in Bordeaux, Malbec had been practically ignored and forgotten about even in France. Malbec has always been considered a mixing grape, to blend and soften the tannins and toughness of the Left and Right Bank wines.
Malbec never fully recovered from the phylloxera epidemic in France, that wiped out French wine stock in the 19th Century. It does not do well once grafted to American root stock like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other wines, which was the way European winemakers grew their wines back after the epidemic.
But Malbec does not suffer this problem in Argentina, as the destructive Phylloxera pest cannot survive in the high altitude climate here.
Malbec adapts easily to climate that other grapes cannot thrive in. Heat waves, drought, high altitudes (between 3,000 - 5,000 feet above sea level) are hazards for Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot and other wines. Malbec thrives in this climate.
Malbec is a medium to full-bodied red wine with medium to high tannins. You can enjoy this wine with rich meals of beef, duck, venison, grilled vegetables, pasta, hearty stews, blue cheese and other sharp cheeses.
