In order to make brandy, you need a sugary liquid from raw materials. The sugary liquid is fermented to make alcohol, which is then concentrated into a spirit. Fermanting grape creates wine. The popularity of wine as a beverage has meant people are very comfortable making alcohol beverages from wine/grapes. The best known brandies in the world come from France: Cognac, Armagnac, and Calvados.
