U.S. still a big draw for Mexicans

People in Mexico think that granting legal status to illegal immigrants would encourage more Mexican citizens to enter the United States illegally, according to a survey by Zogby International.

Mexicans' interest in going to the United States remains strong, even in the current recession, Zogby found. Three in 10 Mexican adults said they would move to the U.S. if they could.

The poll of 1,000 adults living in Mexico found the bad economy and increased immigration enforcement were cited as reasons that fewer people are going to the U.S. and more are returning to Mexico.

Fifty-six percent of those surveyed thought giving legal status to illegal immigrants in the U.S. would make it more likely that people they know would go to the U.S. illegally. Of Mexicans with a member of their immediate household in the U.S., 65 percent said a legalization program would make people they know more likely to go to America illegally.
