A poll of likely voters by Zogby International indicates that America's all-news networks are the most widely viewed for coverage of the war in Iraq. The poll included 1,011 likely voters interviewed March 24, 2003, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.2%.
CNN was cited by 25% of the respondents, followed closely by Fox News at 22%. News and entertainment networks ABC and NBC were tied with 14% of the viewership, followed by MSNBC and CBS, which each drew one in ten (10%) of the viewers.
The 1,011 likely voters don't limit viewership to just one network. Each respondent mentioned an average of two networks. Nearly half (48%) of those who say they are following the war very closely also say they are watching more than three hours each day, while 44% say they watch between one and three hours. A majority (51%) of those who are following the war somewhat closely watch between one and three hours daily, with four in ten (40%) saying they watch less than an hour each day.
Nearly three in ten Democrats cite CNN as the network they watch most, while 27% of Republicans and 26% of independents chose Fox News. CNN was the first choice of all age groups, while ABC tied for second place with Fox News at 19% of viewership by 18-24 year-olds. Fox News was second in every other age category. Among those 70+ years of age, ABC and NBC were tied for third place at 16% of that group's viewership.
More than eight in ten (81%) of those who cite Fox News say they support the war, compared to 18% who oppose. Seven in ten (70%) of NBC's viewership supports the war, with 27% opposed. Viewers of the other networks, on average, support the war effort two to one.
