Zogby Interactive: 24% of U.S. Adults, 42% of First GlobalsTM Will Watch World Cup


38% Say Soccer Likely to One Day Match Popularity of U.S. Big 4 Sports

UTICA, New York - One in four Adults in the U.S. plan to watch at least some of the World Cup soccer matches beginning June 11 in South Africa. Also, 38% say it is likely soccer will one day match the popularity in the U.S. of football, baseball, basketball and hockey.

Higher levels of interest among those ages 30 and under, the First GlobalTM generation, help to boost overall numbers.  Forty-seven percent of First GlobalsTM say soccer will one day match the popularity of the nation's big four spectator sports.  The survey also finds that 23% of respondents play or have a member of their family who plays recreational soccer.

The interactive survey conducted by Zogby International on June 4-7, 2010, has a sample size of 2,109 adults nationwide. A sampling of Zogby International's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the U.S., was invited to participate.  Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender and education to more accurately reflect the population. The margin of error is +/- 2.2 percentage points. Margins of error are higher in sub-groups.
