Global Climate Change & Religion

April 23rd, 2009

Are we now seeing the beginnings of a shift of religious activism to the left in response to global climate change?

Zogby International completed a survey for the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change that found majorities of Catholics making a connection between the tenants of their faith and the need to act to reverse climate change. This need to act tied directly to Catholic beliefs on protecting God’s creation, as well as the poor and future generations.

There has also been growing interest in this issue from evangelical Protestants. Here is part of a report from the April 23 Charlotte Observer: “Leading the charge is Jonathan Merritt, a graduate of Southeastern and the son of former Southern Baptist President James Merritt. Now an Atlanta-based writer, Merritt said the environment is no longer the exclusive domain of the liberal left.

“In the last few years we’ve seen many conservatives say this is a moral issue, and Christians have an answer for it,” Merritt said. He points to pastors such as Rick Warren, the Southern Baptist megachurch minister who has shown an environmental awareness.”

The Evangelical Environmental Network provides a guide for churches to explore what the group calls Creation Care. Televangelist Pat Robertson appears in TV ads with liberal Al Sharpton to promote climate change action.

Is global climate change a religious issue that could unite liberals and conservatives?  Will social issues like abortion and gay rights recede from the political spotlight to be replaced by climate change?

Global Climate change is the new black. It will not unite anyone. Cat and dogs will not be living together to quote Dr. Venkman. Abortion and Gay rights is only used by politicians during election years or for the build up to an election. Politicians are not held accountable by their voters. Most Americans do not even vote. The sooner people start to get interested in the truth behind the marketing of fear, the sooner we can stay out of wars we had no business in being in. Also it will lean toward and era of true problem solvers. I was asked to give money to the aware foundation for reef conservation. If AWARE wanted me to help, they would ask me to pickup garbage the next time I am diving, instead they just wanted 50$ to pay one of their non-profit employees to pick up the garbage – by the way that I pick up, if I see any — which is a rare occurance. Unfortunately this Zogby blog is not helping. I am not a blogger and this will be my only post. Blogging is designed to keep people so busy pucking away at their keyboards that they never will actually get out and do anything. Blogging is great until you find out you have been trying to enlighten so 8th grader that is looking for a good one line slam. Hopefully someone will read my post and boycott Zogby’s useless blog.@Bob

Climate change is a hoax. It is all about the ability of the government to control our lives and take away our freedoms. Hundreds of scientists have said there is no evidence for climate change. By the way, have you noticed it’s “global climate change” now instead of “global warming” or “global cooling”. That is because it looks foolish to keep saying global warming when the world is experiencing record low temperatures, and they looked foolish in the 70s when they were saying global cooling, then we had record high temperatures. They changed to global warming and now global climate change. How arrogant are we to think we can destroy the earth God created?!? So remember this when the government tells you what kind of car you can drive, what type of lightbulb you must use, how much energy you can use to heat or cool your house, etc.

Just as Evangelical Christians and Catholics have forged an alliance about abortion, stem cell research, and life in general so too an alliance between Christians of all sorts and Environmentalists is possible. The former “life” alliance is shaky and limited because of differences in core beliefs about God. The “environmental” alliance would be even more shaky because the core belief of many environmentalists is diametrically opposed to the belief in the existence of God. Several environmentalists believe in Gaia rather than God the Creator.

Some conclusions about the environment is based on loose or bad science. Unfortunately, some technological helps also received bad press because of industrial accidents. Union Carbide placed a full page ad in National Geographic for the “safe” plant they had just built in Bhopal, India. The US government made educational materials available to schools about atomic energy and safety. Guess which plant they used as the most environmentally safe plant for a whole brochure? Yes, Three Mile Island.

i have often wondered at the reasoning of an environmentalist that wants to “preserve” the status quo on endangered species and still proclaim the virtues of evolution. Isn’t part of the idea in evolution not only the survival of the fittest but also the death of those least fit for survival?

Personally, I think it is important to improve the environment. I also know that people have done a better job in the last few decades in doing that.

Also, it is more important to save a life of a person about to be aborted than to save the habitat of a subspecies of animal.

Right on Terie, hoax is the proper word. Global warming became global climate change because the earth is cooling slightly. And man isn’t causing the change either way, warmer or cooler. And as for global climate change I have never heard what they want fixed. Maybe they want winter in the summer, spring in the fall or whatever. But in reality they want is control over our lives. Fight it people.

The question is not whether the global climate is changing. of course it is. The correct question is: Is humankind the cause of these changes or are they natually occuring? I would argue the latter. Here are just a few facts for your consideration. The earth is hundreds of millions of years old and has gone thru many changes in climate and temperature, including ice ages, mini-ages and the subsequent warm-ups that followed. All of these changes occurred long before anyone had ever burned any fossil fuels. It is also important to point out that these changes occur in cycles that go on for over 10,000 years. Most of the warming and cooling has to do with the sun (surprise, surprise) and other natuarally occuring events. These facts of course, are ignored, since they don’t fit the liberal template. The global warming crowd wants you to think that the only history that matters has occurred in the past 100 years.

Further, it is absolutely ridiculous to believe that anyone can create a computer model that can accurately predict global temperatures 100 years from now. To illustrate this point, the most sophisticated computer modesl out there can’t even predict with any accuracy what the weather will be like in a specific location one week from now. Why? Because there are too many variables. Too many possible outcomes because of the huge number of potential changes in these variables and how they interact with each other.

Another example is the annual projections for hurricanes. Despite the fact that we are talking about a single weather event (tropical storms), in a finite area (the Atlantic basin) for a limited period of time (6 months), the projections are frequently wrong by wide margins.

I would also like to point out just one of the many variables that should apply to any global temperature model: cloud cover. It should be obvious that the amount of cloud cover, and its subsequent impact on how much of the suns rays reach earth or are “deflected,” would have an impact on the earth’s temperature. Yet, there is no way these models can predict the amount of cloud cover or where it will occur with any certainty on a monthly or annual basis, let alone over a longer period of time. So what do these models do? Basically they ignore it. I guess they have never heard of the “butterfly effect.”

Despite these well understood examples (and many others not covered here), we are supposed to believe that Al Gore and his minions have developed a computer model that can predict the temperature on a global scale 100 years now! What a joke. Yet, few in the media even think to bring these issues up, let alone engage in any lively debate. Its simply not PC.

The global warming alarmists do everything they can to squelch any notions that are contrary to the politically correct line. They don’t want people to know these facts for fear they will see the many holes in their “logic.” And the mainstream liberal media stands ready to help in every way possible. Ask yourself why you never hear about these types of questions in virtually any media outlets.

Plus, the alarmists are relentless in pushing their agenda. It’s like they say, tell a lie long enough and even people who know its not true will start to believe it. That is where we are now.

You have to give the liberals credit. They have figured out a way to make changes in the weather a taxable event.

If controlling the climate is a proper goal, what makes scientists believe that today’s climate is the optimal one for the earth ?

As an evangelical pastor, I don’t buy into the global warming hoax because it lacks adequate scientific evidence. From a Biblical faith perspective, there is no necessary reason to support MMGW on the basis it is advocated. We as caretakers and responsible users of the earth and its resources have been concerned to avoid polluting and indulge in wasteful consumption, long before Al Gore uttered a about global warming.

If Al Gore, politicians, Hollywood celebrities, and others really wanted to win the great majority of Evangelicals ( and other segments of society), they could begin by radically changing their personal lifestyles. As with religious faith, if you don’t live it you don’t really believe it. Christians whose stated beliefs and behaviors are not in agreement, are called hypocrites… How do you suppose these MMGW advocates should be viewed?

This isn’t going to unite anyone. Global warming advocates are all about getting government to mandate policies and tax and control. “Do what I say” doesn’t unite.

I have questions for MMGW advocates.
-I thought debate was over, why are there so many contrary opinions being expressed? Yes, even by scientists!
-Why don’t they publish a detailed computer prediction now for 2010?
-Why do they resort, as Al Gore does to making ad homonym attacks on those who disagree? as in “Flat Earthers”
-Why do they accuse others of selling out to oil companies and various conflicts of interest and not acknowledge there own financial, political, and other conflict of interest motives.
-Why do they pretend all the evidence is one sided? True scientific inquiry considers all the evidence. Where is the evidence that Global Warming would be all bad? Would there not also be benefits?
-How come I can find credible evidence, for example, for increasing ice in the Antarctic over the Internet, but the MSM will only hyperventilate about melting?
-Why shouldn’t I believe the Al Gore’s of the world are not simply engaging in fear mongering?
-Since when are scientific facts a matter of consensus among scientists? I thought science was a matter of empirical data. Using religious language, scientists indulge in beliefs, too!

Doing what is needed to stop global warming is a win-win. What cuts global warming also cuts air pollution and conserves natural resources. Air pollution is bad for us especially for children. Over-dependence on oil leads to war, which is also bad for children. Oil supplies are dwindling as are water resources. Factory farming and reliance on a meat-based diet not only produces methane, but pollutes the water supply and leads to deforestation and desertification. Come on folks, conservation and cutting use of natural resources is not only good for us it is a moral imperative if we care about the children, present and future.

It’s interesting that most lefties don’t attend church or believe in God at all. Why? Because they believe themselves to be superior beings and consequently believing in any God makes them subservient. They choose to worship the government, the environment, and themselves, not necessarily in that order.

Global “warming” is one of the biggest hoaxes ever perpetrated on mankind and there is absolutely NO hard scientific evidence to support the contention that it is real. Hundreds of very reputable scientists regularly try to expose the fraud that it is only to be ignored by Big Communist Media. And yet, a completely scientifically ignorant, far left politician like Al-E-Gore has every word reported as fact by same.

Global warming is a a way for the politicians to control the masses, and increase taxes. Most credible scientists agreee that our earth has cycles which we have experienced for thousands of years, this has nothing to do with man, or pollution. If you look at Obamas proposal for cap and trade, it is designed to increase taxes and control both industry and individuals. I would suggest that if you are really concerned about global warming that you do your research, and stop listening to the politicians or the main stream media who are using this to support their ultimate agenda.

Regardless of what the media is telling us,the climate change data is not a “consensus” by the scientists. If you only look at hard facts then you can see that the climate is merely vibrating between norms just as it has always done. Why do you thing the Vikings called Greenland “Green Land”?Hard facts, aside from the news media’s misinformation, show that the Arctic ice is at the same level as it was in 1979 and that the newest data from Antarctica reports that the ice shelf is growing.I know it is funny how the “Global Warming” meetings are always greeted with record cold and snow. All that being said,my point is…the debate is very far from over.It is just starting because more and more people are looking at hard data and not a lying politician’s Disney movie.So,no.I do not think the “Global Warming” issue will bring about a meeting of the minds. Only in the liberal leaning groups can you do that because by nature, liberal thinkers are group thinkers.Independent and conservative people are by nature free thinkers and judge their actions and beliefs on their personal research.

Climate change is such a wonderful thing for a political career. Since the earth is always warming or cooling, there will always be something to be alarmed about. One can go to bat for the poorest of the poor and say they will be hit the hardest, ignoring the inability of science to say what the changes will be and where. Some of those very poor live in very inhospitable terrain. Wouldn’t if be funny if the next swing turned some of those deserts into forests and grasslands?

Even those who have strong religious beliefs can analyze the data, count the experts on both sides of the fence, and come to the conclusion that there are better issues to fight for.

As an engineer/scientist I feel it is imparative that measurements or estimates of all types of pollutants versus all sources (i.e. a spread sheet) should be developed before any sane decision can be made with regard to mankind’s contribution. EDverything is just emotion, speculation and food for foolish people.

Perhaps there is global heating. Although there is some doubt. If man’s contribution is miniscule (as I feel) in contrast to other sources, then spending billions to reduce a small contribution to an even smaller one is foolhearty. However, if man’s contribution is significant, well then there is cause for action. So show me. Produce the spreadsheet!

You sound just like my grandfather years ago. Thank you for your common ‘cents’.
GOD is still in control=we could take better care of this earth, but not lead by Gore (look at the house he built) or LaLaLand in Calif. where they do what feels good first.
WV my be a fly-over state, but we live within our means and can take care of ourselves-with GOD’S help.

Sorry Frances, but this is my third time for the Global Cooling/Warming=
They got all the money they need for their warnings and they kept quite for about twenty years.
In 1950’s we were going to have to live under ground”"No Sun Shine” for us, if we did’nt pay up. We paid up and it went away. I am 65+ too.
Go to Snopes.com and put in tale of two houses. An eye opener!
